Dry Creek Valley There are two methodologies for growing Zinfandel in Dry Creek Valley. One consists of traditional farming practices, which includes the dry-farming of head-trained, spur-pruned vines, that are quite mature and severely thinned in the spring to produce low yields. The other employs more modern methods, including bilateral cordon, spur-pruned on-wire trellising, drop irrigation, and carefully manicured canopies. We source our Zinfandel grapes from vineyards on the benchlands and hillsides, which are farmed both ways. The combination of the area’s climate, our vineyard sites, and the two types of the farming methods used produces excellent fruit with intensely concentrated flavor. Vintage profile The 2007 vintage was a winemaker’s dream, and, quite possibly, the vintage of a lifetime. An unusually dry winter gave way to a warm , dry spring, which significantly reduced the crop size. Conditions such as these typically produce very highly concentrated grapes. And because there were no heat waves during the summer months, the fruit matured slowly and evenly. As a result there was full phenolic development in our red fruit and an ideal level of ripeness, thereby making it a perfect vintage for us. Harvest commenced in mid-August and ended on Halloween. We had the luxury of slowly bringing in the fruit, picking small lots of fruit at a time only when optimally ripe, because there was still no rain in sight. Even then, we were amazed at how profusely aromatic and pronounced the flavors were. Winemaker's Notes To ensure that we get the maximum amount of color and flavor from our Zinfandel grapes, we use a variety of techniques, which include fermentation in open-top fermenters for approximately one week and implementing several punch downs a day. We also blend in small amounts of Petite Sirah for added structure. The wine was aged in French oak barrels for a mere twelve months. That was all that was necessary given the fully mature internal structure of the grapes and the fact we didn’t want to mask a single one of this vintage’s amazing aromatic compounds. This wine pushes the envelope of sheer decadence with an expressive fragrance of briary berries, strawberry jam, pepper and spice. Deep, rich layers of blueberries, raspberries, dark chocolate and mint build and linger with a vanilla caramel finish.
